About the Council on General Education
The Council on General Education is an extension of the Office of the Chief Academic Officer/Executive Vice Chancellor. Its role is to:
- Oversee and maintain the integrity of the USG Core Curriculum
- Promote the importance and quality of the Core Curriculum at the various System institutions
- Establish criteria that determine which courses are appropriate for inclusion in the Core Curriculum
- Ensure the transferability of the Core Curriculum among System institutions.
The Council on General Education thus acts as a clearinghouse for the System's Core Curriculum and for the Core at each institution. Any changes to Areas A-E of an institution's Core require the Council's approval. Approved additions or deletions are then posted to the System's website.
-
The Council normally meets three times per year: once each semester and once in the summer. The dates of the meetings are circulated via the VPAA Listserv well in advance so that agenda items can be gathered and sent to Council members prior to the meeting.
Agenda items from institutions should be submitted in electronic form. For each proposed new course, please use the Core Curriculum Course Proposal Form (MSWord doc 36k).

Agenda items, questions, or comments should be directed to:
