Meeting Minutes: Committee on Academic Affairs

Administrative Committee on Academic Affairs
October 18, 1996

  1. Chairman Morgan Stapleton called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. The minutes of the August 7, 1996 meeting were approved as distributed.
     
  2. Frank Butler presented a report of the recent actions of the Council on General Education. The following topics were covered:
     
    1. Pre-cal as a requirement
    2. Pre-cal permissible
    3. Major specific courses in DII
    4. Calculas as a requirement
    5. Statistics
    6. Health Professions as Sciences
    7. Submission of Area F electronically

  3. Morgan Stapleton presented the report of the Executive Committee regarding the disposition of Discipline Committee recommendations.
     
  4. Ed Rugg presented the report from the Admissions Study Group. Jim Muyskens invited comments on the report.
     
  5. Jim Muyskens indicated that we will use a four-digit course numbering system. The first digit will be used to indicate level. He would like to hear from us within the week regarding uses for the other three digits.
     
  6. Morgan Stapleton discussed the semester system calendar. It appears that all institutions will include a spring break in the Spring Semester.
     
  7. Martha Nesbitt reminded us to submit materials for the SREB report. She also presented a recommendation regarding introductory foreign language(s) being exempt from the 120 hour limit.
     
  8. Jim Muyskens discussed Area F and asked each institution to look at Area F and program requirements to determine any transfer problems.
     
  9. David Morgan presented information on waivers to degree limits, accreditation and Board of Regents Distinguished Professors.
     
  10. Cathie Hudson discussed statistics regarding admissions and the time table for implementing the new admissions standards.
     
  11. Kathleen Burk presented a suggestion regarding the Regents' Test.
     
  12. Pete Silver provided an update on the PREP program.
     
  13. John Preston described a new initiative of 100 $1,000 scholarships for study abroad. He also reminded us of the Study Abroad Fair on November 14 in Athens.
     
  14. Jim Muyskens discussed the following topics:
     
    1. Program Approvals
    2. Impact of 6% Salary Increases
    3. Changing of names of colleges and schools
    4. Model classroom - before and after pictures
    5. J. B. Matthews' retirement
    6. FY 97 $500,000 for faculty development--ideas are welcomed--send them to Linda Williams
    7. Comprehensive Strategic Planning

  15. Joe Szutz described the current process for system level and institutional enrollment projections.
